History of Cornucopia

Dr. Geoffrey Broderick graduated from Kansas State University in 1969. During his commencement year he completed the first course in Veterinary Nutrition ever taught in a Veterinary Medical School in America. Opening his practice in Huntington, New York, Dr. Broderick became the largest-selling veterinarian of Hills Prescription Diet to New York State. He started a Science Diet and Prescription Diet Distributorship in 1971 servicing the New York Metropolitan area.

Dr. BroderickWithin these few years, Dr. Broderick recognized that the Hills Prescription Diet concept was a valuable therapeutic regimen, but was severely limited because an animal would have to be sick and receive a prescription to purchase the product. Dr. Broderick spent the next several years developing and formulating a product that would not only meet the therapeutic requirements, but that was also designed primarily to prevent disease by daily preventative nutrition. Included in this process was, for the first time, the elimination of chemical additives, colors, flavors, enhancers and sugars.

After years of designing and producing home canned prototypes of the first natural pet food, Cornucopia was born and incorporated in 1977. The founding of Cornucopia marked the beginning of the Natural Pet Food Industry in the United States. Cornucopia started with two Natural Dog Food Products available in one size.

Then, Dr. Broderick's award-winning work showing that a low-ash, low- magnesium, acid-metabolized diet prevented and cured Feline Urinary Syndrome led to the birth of Cornucopia Natural Cat Food in two sizes.

The years that followed painstakingly produced more foods including America's first senior dog and lite diets. Cornucopia was funded with capital produced essentially by a successful veterinary practice. The majority of the working capital was invested in raw materials and quality control. Cornucopia had to grow by word-of-mouth, T.V. and radio appearances by Dr. Broderick, as well as many articles written about him and his revolutionary food.

The results produced by feeding this natural food made with a wide variety of quality ingredients incorporated into a tasty formula, were healthy, vibrant animals that showed significant improvement over their prior general health and performance. The Cornucopia recipes are proprietary formulations with their evolution perfected over the course of more than a decade. These formulations, although imitated, have proven too complex to duplicate.

The packaging portrays a healthy natural homemade food, and consumers love it. It has been nominated several times for many different packaging awards for it's style, cleanliness and overall quality of design.

Cornucopia, now in it's eighteenth year, has grown to 43 Stock Keeping units (SKUs) of Natural Cat, Dog, and Horse Foods, with more to come. It's the overwhelming Pet Product leader in the growing Natural Pet Food Industry in the U.S. and Canada.

Cornucopia was built in the belief that a complex formulation of a wide variety of nutritious and usable natural ingredients could emulate the natural diet of the ancient evolving dog and cat and eliminate the chemical additives found in pet foods to produce a healthy, vibrant pet.
